JONATHAN CREHAN (NZ) I enjoy writing music which has a clear direction, and a great sense of dynamism. Sometimes theatrical, I like to get the most out my notes, and imbue a sense of excitement in all my pieces. I am adept at composing both tonal and atonal music, and I take both forms seriously. I find that one influences the other, and that they are linked together through concepts of shape, texture and structural form. Essentially, I believe that the way forward with my music, is through combining the best that history has to offer, with the imagination and innovation of 21st century creativity. Jonathan Crehan (Taranaki, New Zealand) began composing at 8 years old, and wrote his first orchestral piece, Olympus, at the age of 14. It was reviewed in the local newspaper as "... a true orchestral piece, featuring themes that linger in the mind, effective orchestration, and the creation of real atmosphere." He continued to write orchestral works around this period, and began to receive substantial local commissions. At 16, he met Sir William Southgate, a brilliant conductor and composer, who declared, "Right off the bat you can tell that this guy is wonderfully gifted." A year later, he entered Victoria University of Wellington, and studied under John Psathas, Jack Body, and Michael Norris, gaining an A grade average for his degree. Thanks to a generous scholarship, Jonathan was able to have full-time, private study with Sir William Southgate for 2008. As Sir William's only student, he was able to work one-to-one and finesse some of the skills that he had developed over the years. Jonathan was also awarded the Composer in Residence Position at Samuel Marsden Collegiate, for 2008 and 2009. He was the 2008 Winner of the Orpheus Publications Composition Competition (Australia). Jonathan also won the 7th ADAM international Cello Festival Young Composers Competition in 2008 with his piece Fantasia Festa. Adjudicator and Cellist, Alexander Ivashkin commented: "The composer's language is contemporary, matching the best examples of contemporary instrumental style.." Jonathan aims to become a consummate conductor-composer, as well as a leading light for the new generation of people in his country. contact: jonomuso@gmail.com some works can be found at: http://sounz.org.nz/contributor/composer/1260 |
