ULRICH KREPPEIN (DE) Ulrich Kreppein's music is strongly rooted in integrative concepts drawn from an interest in early romantic thought in which artwork is conceived as a center of a network of diverse influences and streams. He is also influenced by the music of the late 19th century’s composers whose music suggests poly-stylistic ideas: Franz Schreker, Alban Berg and Charles Ives. Ulrich Kreppein’s music tries to integrate very diverse material which yield to represent the whole variety and complexity of music and noises that surround us in the ‘real’ world and in our musical memory. In doing so, he tries to shape them in formal processes that challenge a one-directional narrative approach. Ulrich Kreppein’s music tries to refer to an organic concept of form that can grow and digress in all different directions. This organic concept led him to explore the techniques of French spectral music, which keep enriching his harmonic thinking as well his formal processes. Ulrich Kreppein's music and formal concepts often relate to non musical art-forms such as novels or movies and their ideas of temporal development. A main focus of Ulrich Kreppeins’ work is music with text and music theatre. ULRICH KREPPEIN was born in 1979 in Germany. He studied at Robert Schumann Music University (Musikhochschule) in Düsseldorf: Composition with Prof. Manfred Trojahn, Piano with Prof. Thomas Leander as well as Musicology with Prof. Andreas Ballstaedt. After further studying Composition with Prof. Tristan Murail at Columbia University in New York during 2003-2004, he completed his Diploma in Düsseldorf in January 2005. He is currently enrolled at Harvard University, as PhD student in Composition working with Julian Anderon, Joshua Fineberg, Hans Tutschku, Brian Ferneyhough and Helmut Lachenmann. Since his early ages, Ulrich Kreppein was awarded several prizes such as “Bundeswettbewerb Jugend komponiert” (National Competition for Young Composers) in 1998 and 1999 and the Andreas Werckmeisterpreis of the City of Halberstadt for an orchestral composition. More recently he was awarded the “Saarbrückener Komponistenwerkstatt” (Composers Workshop Saarbrücken) in 2001 and a third prize at the “Musica Sacra Competition” in Poland in 2005. In 2008 he was a participant at the summer courses at Acanthes in Metz, France and he was selected to the Final of the International "Tactus" Competition in Mons, Belgium. Ulrich Kreppein received scholarships from the “Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes” (German National Merit Foundation) from 2002 to 2005 and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in 2003/04 and is currently a presidential Fellow at Harvard University. His music has been performed in many places such as the Berliner Philharmonie and the Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as in Moscow, Düsseldorf, Munich and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
