ULO KRIGUL (EE)

Having studied compositions and tuba performance at Tallinn’s Music High School, Ülo Krigul (born 1978) went on to study composition at the Estonian Academy of Music with Raimo Kangro, René Eespere and Tõnu Kõrvits.
From 2004-2005, Krigul furthered his training under Prof. Detlev Müller-Siemens at Vienna’s Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst. In 2006 he received his master’s degree from the Estonian Academy of Music (thesis supervisor Tõnu Kõrvits).
Ülo Krigul is also an appreciable organizer of various music events on the Estonian scene. He was a founder of the Autumn Festival at the Estonian Academy of Music, and since 2005 he is one of the artistic directors of the annual Estonian Music Days Festival.
On top of the above, Krigul has been active as an arranger and keyboard player in different jazz and rock groups.
Ülo Krigul’s music has been performed at the festivals of new music in Estonia as well as in Germany, Austria, Latvia, the Czech Republic, the Ukraine and other countries.
Krigul’s orchestral composition JenZeits was awarded the Europäische Komponistenpreis at the 2005 young.euro.classic festival in Berlin. The world premiere of JenZeits, by the Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre under conductor Paul Mägi, took place on August 9th, 2005 in the Berlin Concert Hall.
JenZeits came first in the "under 30" category at the 2007 International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. Krigul composed the soundtrack for the Estonian movie "Sügisball" ("Autumn Ball") that was awarded the Orizzonti Prize at the 2007 Venice Film Festival.
Ülo Krigul is a 2005 recipient of the Estonian National Culture Foundation's Debut Award, and a 2006 winner of the Heiner Eller Prize.
