ALEKSANDER NOWAK (PL)

I don’t
think I can pinpoint any specific aesthetic or philosophical presuppositions in my work, at least not yet. I believe that in order to come up with something valuable and interesting, one should keep trying hard and keep questioning the result; the rest is a mistery. My main goal and drive in composing is to build or find a way of communicating with the listener; a way of combining things that are already known to him or her, and these that are completely new.
I am mainly focused on ‘concert’ music for different kinds of chamber and symphonic instrumental ensembles, lately also with use of human voice, including stage and operatic music. My nearest plans include string quartet, piano concerto, violin concerto and opera.
I have also had a chance (and enjoyed it) to write soundtrack for film; I would love to do it again...
.

ALEKSANDER NOWAK
was born in 1979 in Gliwice, where he has started his music education around the age of 14. Some two years later, he began composing under the direction of Uliana Bilan. In 2001 he started composition studies in prof. Aleksander Lasoń’s class at The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music and after obtaining the Magister Degree in 2006, he continued studies at the University of Louisville, USA with Dr Steve Rouse, where he graduated and received the Master of Arts degree, in May 2008.
Currently, he works as an Assistant in the Composition and Theory Department at the Academy of Music in Katowice, where he teaches Orchestration, Score Reading and Information Technologies.

In June 2007 his piece “Fiddler’s Green and White Savannas Never More”, was presented by the Polish Radio during the 54 UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris.
He has received commissions from “The Warsaw Autumn Friends Society” with support of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation in Munich, “Silesian Guitar Autumn Festival” in Tychy, “Polish Music Festival” in Krakow and the Silesian Quartet.
